Fondue RestaurantsOriginated in Switzerland in the 18th Century, Fondue comes from the French word fondre, meaning "to melt". Made with two or more types of cheese, wine, and a bit of flour. Peasants in Switzerland needed to find a use for the hardened cheese they had kept to get them through winter. The ingredients used to make fondue were often found in the average home in Switzerland. The Swiss concocted a recipe that combined the hardened cheese with wine and then cooked it over a fire to make a tasty meal.
